God is on a mission

That is why APCH exists. We are called to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, in word and deed, both at home and abroad.  Because of the grace of God, we want to use our gifts freely and with joy for the benefit and welfare of others, sharing generously to those who are in need.

We focus our efforts

Locally: At home in The Hague, our ministry includes a partnership with ministries that respond to the needs of people who suffer from poverty, hunger, displacement, addiction or injustice.

Globally: We engage in ministry with mission agencies and organizations, sharing resources, volunteers, and expertise, to bring about change. In addition to giving financial, we also participate in short-term learning and mission opportunities.

APCH Mission Trip 2012

Pata Rat, Cluj-Napaca, Romania

Sunday, October 14 – Sunday, October 21

The Roma of Romania

There is an estimate of two million Roma – commonly referred to as gypsies – living in Romania. Contrary to widespread belief, the Roma did not originate in Romania, but travelled west from northern India around 1000 AD. In Europe, curiosity for these travelling people gave way to suspicion, discrimination, and eventually harsh persecution, the effects of which the Roma still face today. 80% live far below the poverty line, are completely segregated from mainstream society, and cannot read or write.

Building at Pata Rat

The APCH mission trip focuses on families living in the “trash belt”, where the Roma (both young and old) make a living off of scraps of material – bottles, cans, and metal – that can be salvaged from others’ trash.

Pata Rat is situated at the suburbs of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and serves as the dumping grounds for the surrounding communities’ garbage. More than 1400 Roma live at the dump, unable to receive government health assistance or education because of their undocumented status.

Many children grow up in this community, knowing nothing of the world beyond the garbage dump. Some walk barefoot and work without gloves scavenging anything fit to recycle and, not uncommonly, something to eat.

Cultivating Lives

In October 2012, you have the opportunity to change lives – including your own. Last year, 68 members and friends of APCH served in this mission trip. They spent one week building and renovating houses, teaching Roma children, distributing food, and providing medical care. Along with the ProRomi Foundation, APCH volunteers worked hard to meet the practical needs of the community while demonstrating the love of Christ.

Our return this fall will allow us to cultivate the ‘seeds’ planted last year. Relationships between APCH, ProRomi and the Roma people will be advanced and the Gospel will continue to take root.

This mission trip is an opportunity for you to use the gifts and resources God has given you, to meet practical needs for a desperate group of people, while spreading the Gospel.

Read further for more detailed information about serving the Roma in Pata Rat.

Mission trip profile

Trip Objectives

Reach those in desperate need in a foreign country.

Have our eyes opened to the living conditions and needs of others.

Allow God to work in our hearts, that we may be more focused on others and become instruments for Him in this world.

Become a more united body of believers through the travel, shared efforts, fun, laughter, tears, prayer, worship, and astonishing experiences by which we’ll grow in unexpected ways.

Your Impact

Participants will undertake various activities in effort to help the Roma toward a better standard of living. Below is a sample of possible projects and activities; these are still being finalized and may be subject to change. More information will be available at information and orientation meetings.

Building & Renovation
Teams will be responsible for assembling pre-fabricated houses. These houses are easy to build and can be completed in five days. Renovation teams will be dedicated to the reparation of roofs and windows on existing buildings and houses as well as other related jobs.

Catering
This team will be making lunch for all the APCH teams. After all the crews have come in for lunch, the kitchen team will clean up.

Food Distribution
This team will be responsible for preparing and distributing small portions of food to the local Roma. Some will distribute food packages to those in the village as well as those working on the trash belt.

Kids Programs
This team will run a kids program in the morning and afternoon. Activities include crafts, games, singing, Bible stories and possibly some attention on hygiene.

Devotions & Worship
Following breakfast each morning there will be a short time of worship and devotions. In the evening after dinner, there will be a time of worship and reflection. Volunteers will be able to share what they are experiencing.

Information Meetings

Orientation - April, May & June 2012
At the Orientation Desk in the APCH foyer, information will be given regarding the mission trip, what conditions to expect, how to behave in a Roma community, and the work ahead.

Informational meetings – September 4, 2012 & October 2, 2012
These are important meetings for volunteers. Details about the trip and the work team will be discussed, and your questions can be answered.

About ProRomi

ProRomi is a Dutch organization committed to the Roma suffering from malnutrition, extremely poor housing, lack of good education, illiteracy, discrimination and general deprivation in Romania.

ProRomi provides help for the construction, organization and financing of Roma schools and medical facilities, as well as construction and renovation projects in Roma neighbourhoods and villages where poverty prevails. ProRomi engages in the development of Roma communities by assisting in the purchase and design of multi-purpose centers for education, health and religious activities of the Roma, and offering after-school and literacy courses for Roma adults.

Working from a Christian background, ProRomi reaches these people by preaching the gospel first by deed, and then with word. APCH volunteers will serve for just one week, but fortunately ProRomi will be there to continue what we have built and invested together.

Mission and vision of Pastor Bert

The Dutch missionary couple Bert and Margriet Looij answered God’s calling and left to Romania in 1992. They settled in Cluj-Napoca and adopted three Romanian children. From 1995 Bert and Margriet have been working intensely with the Roma of Pata Rat. Since 2006, they have worked with ProRomi Holland and ProRoma Romania. Bert connects with the Roma by working with them near the trash belt and will be leading APCH teams at Pata Rat. Margriet helps the mothers and children. The Lord has richly blessed their labor of love. They are literally living out the great commission that we can read in Matthew 28:19-20.

Matthew 25:40

Mission Possible -- by Keith Harper

Don’t we just love to stay within our comfort zones, hiding behind our busyness and (over) commitments. I know I do.

Late last year, however, my wife and I stepped out of our boat (a comfortable life as expats in The Hague) and worked in a trash belt near Cluj-Napoca, Romania amongst the Roma gypsies for a week. We went with more than 60 members of our church, The American Protestant Church of The Hague (APCH), via Dortmund and Wizz Air (!) to Cluj.

Mission trip | APCH

Our home was a diaconal centre and although basic, seemed like a 5-star hotel after a day at the dump; however 2 days without water gave us a taste of what the Roma lived with daily.

Mission trip | APCH

We divided into teams: house building, house renovation, food distribution, medical and children’s work. I was in the 2-man renovation team which mended windows, fixed doors and patched walls of the small dilapidated shacks which the Roma families know as home. Through the day, as we worked, I could “zone out” the incredible poverty – the scantily clad children, bare foot in the rubbish and the mud; the filth, the dogs, the rats and the cockroaches but in the evenings back at the centre (and now as I write) the faces of the children came back to me and my eyes filled with tears at the recollection of the plight of these families. How can this be possible and in a European country?

Wisely we were instructed at the outset that we would be frustrated and saddened by our seemingly meagre efforts in light of so much need. Indeed it was so. We could do little to change their lives but many of our lives would be changed by them. The rubbish dump itself was like a scene from a post-nuclear strike: apocalyptic. The children cling to the garbage trucks as they enter the site so they might have first pickings from the truck’s load.

As the temperatures drop in the northern winter and the snows fall, I can’t help but wonder how they forage for food and recyclable goods in such conditions.

Mission trip | APCH

Yes, I have seen the BBC documentary of the organised Romanian gangs descending on our shopping streets; yes, I haven’t heard a good word said about the Roma and yes, maybe some of the criticism is well-founded but surely no matter what your political persuasion, social prejudices or knowledge about these people: it is a fundamental human right to have access freely to sanitation, education and medical attention?

If you’ve been thinking but hesitating about going on a mission trip, hesitate no longer; get out of your boat and pray that Jesus would be your guide and strength as you step out on the water and make mission possible.

We often get asked “How can we get involved at APCH? What is there for us to do?” This is a great and important question. But honestly, that’s not the first question we want to answer. Before we show you all the ways to get involved in the ministries of our church, it is important to note here, that the first and most important thing we want you to be involved in is your life. Your life as a child of God. Your life as a follower of Jesus. Your life as a response to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Your life matters to God. Before you serve anywhere or volunteer for anything, we want you to be involved in the daily life of a disciple.

Here is a Top Ten of simple habits for the life of any Christian. This list is not comprehensive, but it is a good start.

Worship God

Worship God together with other believers. Arrive early at church gatherings and stay late. Come early and come often.
Psalm 100:1-5

Grow in grace through the reading of God's word

Actively engage in listening to the preaching from the Bible on Sunday morning. Then at home, during the week, read the Bible on your own. Read the Bible with family and friends or in a small group. Prayerfully talk about what you are reading with each other.
Psalm 1:1-6,  2 Timothy 3:16-17

Pray

Not only at the beginning or end of the day. Pray throughout the day. Never stop talking with God.
1 Thessalonians 5:17

Eat together

Whether with family or friends or roommates. Take time to eat together. Before your meal, pray a prayer of gratitude to God. After your meal, read a portion of Scripture together.
Titus 1:8

Keep the Sabbath

Observe the Lord’s Day. Prioritize your life together around worship. Don’t just fit it in when it is convenient and when it happens not to interfere with sports or other activities. If you are a student, take one day a week where you will not do school work. Go to church. Meet up with friends. Participate in a youth group or a bible study on that day.
Exodus 20:8-9

Lovingly do whatever God called you to do

Do it with your whole heart, mind and body. Work as unto the Lord. If your work is studying at school or in an office or at home, whatever you do, in thought, word and deed, do it all in the name of Lord. Don’t waste your life.
Colossians 3:17; 2 Thessalonians 3:12; Romans 12:1-2

Talk with people about the grace of God

Tell them how grace changes everything.
Acts 1:8

Lovingly serve your neighbor

Advance the well-being of your neighbor in any way you can. Make your house an embassy of grace.
Hebrews 13:16

Invite neighbors, friends for a meal in your home

Practice hospitality. Talk with your family or room-mates about regularly planning and budgeting for such hospitality. Look for ways to spend time with people from church.
Hebrews 13:2, 1 Peter 4:9

Be generous with your money

Tithe 10% or more of your monthly income to help APCH do God’s work in the world.
2 Corinthians 9:6-8

Sunday morning involvement

Here’s what we recommend for your weekly involvement at Church on Sunday.

Attend Starting Point

Go to the introductory session for APCH called Starting Point.

Bring others

Bring others to the meetings of APCH. Bring a friend along to a Bible study or a Sunday service.

Welcome newcomers

If you see someone new, introduce yourself, explain what is going on and offer to sit with them. Engage them in friendly conversation. Look around and see if someone needs you.

Introduce yourself to the Sunday School teacher

If you have school age children, introduce yourself to the Sunday School teacher and let them know if your child has any special needs that morning.

Encourage your children

If you have students at home, encourage them to participate in the youth and college age groups. Encourage them to finish their school work in six days and set aside one for worship and fellowship.

Sing

Sing. Even if you think you can’t. Sing with enthusiasm and gusto. Make a joyful noise.

Pray

Pray for the pastor and the worship leaders.

Pay attention

Actively listen to the sermon.

Mingle

Stay around after church. Talk with others. Ask: How did the sermon help you today? What was meaningful to you?

Get involved

Fill out the volunteer survey on our website and tell us what area of ministry you are interested in.

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." -- Ephesians 2:10 ESV

We are eager to find out who you are and what special talents and abilities you bring to APCH. Our church will flourish when we offer our hearts, passions and talents to meet the enormous needs all around us. APCH will only thrive when people from all walks of life- judges and doctors, teachers and nurses, fulltime stay at-home moms, business executives, college students, conservatory students, engineers, hairdressers and coffee shop owners are mobilized, empowered and used by God. What would happen if our whole church got involved in serving and devoted their God-given talents to the well-being of others? Think of all the lives that will be changed, the relationships that will be formed and the joy this will bring.

APCH can become strong and healthy because of the thousands of hours given each month by volunteers. While there are a few staff members who work at APCH, we enlist volunteers whenever possible. We only add to staff when it’s essential. The staff is there to facilitate the ministry of the people.

Please take a moment and consider how you may get involved. Also think about how your children might be involved. We hope all our children will discover that it is normal to serve. It is normal for people who are discovering the grace of God in the gospel to serve others.

Some of the work will be fun and exciting. Other jobs are quiet, unglamorous and behind the scenes. Some of these projects require significant skill and preparations; others simply require a willing attitude and availability.

“I believe God heard their cry”

I’ve been to a few mission trips and every mission trip focuses on different expects of mission. I have been and seen many poor people around the world but what touches my soul is this particular outcast group of Gypsies. There are similar groups of Gypsies that I’ve seen who live in Cairo, Egypt in the trash belt but I don’t have close contact with them. But I know God is doing an amazing work through his people reaching out to these communities. I believe God heard their cry like He did in the OT when the Israelites’ cried to Him for deliverance.

-- Cherlene Robson

“It really opened my eyes”

I experienced a change in my heart not just because I felt bad but because it really opened my eyes or woke me up to realize that people that live the way they do everyday can still come to put a smile on their faces! Was amazing!

“God has delivered me”

Because of my personal experiences in recent years, I see that God has delivered me through a lot for a purpose. I am curious as to where this will lead me in mission work. Though this was my first experience [with missions], it just feels right.

-- Holly Brownrigg

“We are doing this for God”

The mission trip of 2011 to Romania was definitely one of the most important trips in my life. Having just started university and worrying about workload, grades and adjusting to my new home, it was great to go and focus on other people. For once it wasn’t about what I can do for myself and my family, but what I can do for other people. It was really nice to be around people for a week long who are also believers, and constant being in the sphere of "we are doing this for God". I also really enjoyed getting to know the members of our congregation better. I would recommend anyone who would like to spend some time with God, with other people who believe and to give a hand to people who need, to go on the mission trip of this year!

-- Sandra

“God will continue to work there”

I had not expected to be particularly touched by the poverty, the children, devotions, or anything really, having been part of so many projects like this before and having had much exposure to poverty and its accompanying social problems. But the Roma are different, it seems. And being on the other side of the story (usually, I was more on the side of Pastor Bert and co) was a new experience. It’s much more difficult to see the long term effects of any of our efforts; at some point I could only feel depressed at the thought that this cycle will continue for generations, that the children we worked with only continue the same pattern as their parents and grandparents before them, and that what we did just seemed futile. It made me want to do more and at the same time, give up and hang it all, for what was the point? But I know that we did some good, and God will continue to work there, maybe not in the way we expect or would want even, but I’ll leave it up to Him.

-- Amanda van der Ploeg
