God is on a mission
That is why APCH exists. We are called to spread the good news of Jesus Christ, in word and deed, both at home and abroad. Because of the grace of God, we want to use our gifts freely and with joy for the benefit and welfare of others, sharing generously to those who are in need.
We focus our efforts
Locally: At home in The Hague, our ministry includes a partnership with ministries that respond to the needs of people who suffer from poverty, hunger, displacement, addiction or injustice.
Globally: We engage in ministry with mission agencies and organizations, sharing resources, volunteers, and expertise, to bring about change. In addition to giving financial, we also participate in short-term learning and mission opportunities.
We often get asked “How can we get involved at APCH? What is there for us to do?” This is a great and important question. But honestly, that’s not the first question we want to answer. Before we show you all the ways to get involved in the ministries of our church, it is important to note here, that the first and most important thing we want you to be involved in is your life. Your life as a child of God. Your life as a follower of Jesus. Your life as a response to the gospel of Jesus Christ. Your life matters to God. Before you serve anywhere or volunteer for anything, we want you to be involved in the daily life of a disciple.
Here is a Top Ten of simple habits for the life of any Christian. This list is not comprehensive, but it is a good start.
Worship God |
Worship God together with other believers. Arrive early at church gatherings and stay late. Come early and come often. |
Grow in grace through the reading of God's word |
Actively engage in listening to the preaching from the Bible on Sunday morning. Then at home, during the week, read the Bible on your own. Read the Bible with family and friends or in a small group. Prayerfully talk about what you are reading with each other. |
Pray |
Not only at the beginning or end of the day. Pray throughout the day. Never stop talking with God. |
Eat together |
Whether with family or friends or roommates. Take time to eat together. Before your meal, pray a prayer of gratitude to God. After your meal, read a portion of Scripture together. |
Keep the Sabbath |
Observe the Lord’s Day. Prioritize your life together around worship. Don’t just fit it in when it is convenient and when it happens not to interfere with sports or other activities. If you are a student, take one day a week where you will not do school work. Go to church. Meet up with friends. Participate in a youth group or a bible study on that day. |
Lovingly do whatever God called you to do |
Do it with your whole heart, mind and body. Work as unto the Lord. If your work is studying at school or in an office or at home, whatever you do, in thought, word and deed, do it all in the name of Lord. Don’t waste your life. |
Talk with people about the grace of God |
Tell them how grace changes everything. |
Lovingly serve your neighbor |
Advance the well-being of your neighbor in any way you can. Make your house an embassy of grace. |
Invite neighbors, friends for a meal in your home |
Practice hospitality. Talk with your family or room-mates about regularly planning and budgeting for such hospitality. Look for ways to spend time with people from church. |
Be generous with your money |
Tithe 10% or more of your monthly income to help APCH do God’s work in the world. |
Sunday morning involvement
Here’s what we recommend for your weekly involvement at Church on Sunday.
Attend Starting Point |
Go to the introductory session for APCH called Starting Point. |
Bring others |
Bring others to the meetings of APCH. Bring a friend along to a Bible study or a Sunday service. |
Welcome newcomers |
If you see someone new, introduce yourself, explain what is going on and offer to sit with them. Engage them in friendly conversation. Look around and see if someone needs you. |
Introduce yourself to the Sunday School teacher |
If you have school age children, introduce yourself to the Sunday School teacher and let them know if your child has any special needs that morning. |
Encourage your children |
If you have students at home, encourage them to participate in the youth and college age groups. Encourage them to finish their school work in six days and set aside one for worship and fellowship. |
Sing |
Sing. Even if you think you can’t. Sing with enthusiasm and gusto. Make a joyful noise. |
Pray |
Pray for the pastor and the worship leaders. |
Pay attention |
Actively listen to the sermon. |
Mingle |
Stay around after church. Talk with others. Ask: How did the sermon help you today? What was meaningful to you? |
Get involved |
Fill out the volunteer survey on our website and tell us what area of ministry you are interested in. |
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them." -- Ephesians 2:10 ESV
We are eager to find out who you are and what special talents and abilities you bring to APCH. Our church will flourish when we offer our hearts, passions and talents to meet the enormous needs all around us. APCH will only thrive when people from all walks of life- judges and doctors, teachers and nurses, fulltime stay at-home moms, business executives, college students, conservatory students, engineers, hairdressers and coffee shop owners are mobilized, empowered and used by God. What would happen if our whole church got involved in serving and devoted their God-given talents to the well-being of others? Think of all the lives that will be changed, the relationships that will be formed and the joy this will bring.
APCH can become strong and healthy because of the thousands of hours given each month by volunteers. While there are a few staff members who work at APCH, we enlist volunteers whenever possible. We only add to staff when it’s essential. The staff is there to facilitate the ministry of the people.
Please take a moment and consider how you may get involved. Also think about how your children might be involved. We hope all our children will discover that it is normal to serve. It is normal for people who are discovering the grace of God in the gospel to serve others.
Some of the work will be fun and exciting. Other jobs are quiet, unglamorous and behind the scenes. Some of these projects require significant skill and preparations; others simply require a willing attitude and availability.
Here is a snapshot of all the different ways you can be involved at APCH.

These short-term op- portunities are a good starting point for anyone desiring to get involved in APCH and are fit for just about anyone. |
These opportunities require a bit more com- mitment, but have a pre defined start and stop date. Good if you are al- ready familiar with APCH. |
These are ongoing mini- stry positions such as musician, choir member, Sunday school teacher, lay reader, council mem- ber, people greeter, etc. |
These longer-term paid positions open up perio- dically and require a higher degree of dedi- cation. Good if you want to serve for a living. |
