John the Baptist, a quirky, itinerant preacher, is called by God to “ready the way of the Lord,” the coming Messiah. John's message of repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins is stirring to his listeners. But there is a problem. Those coming to be baptized are simply following the herd: they've come for the ritual. But John is having none of it, he minces no words, he issues a clear imperative: a life turned toward God in genuine repentance, must result in visible fruits of obedience.
