Easter Sunday Worship Service - April 9, 2023
Each gospel writer tells the story of Jesus’ resurrection with a slightly different emphasis. Matthew’s gospel is the only one where the angel says, “Do not be afraid.” Those are important words. One Old Testament scholar says that both Old and New Testaments can be summarized with two words: “Fear not!” It’s an intriguing thought. Into our busy and chaotic lives, the angel continues to speak those words: “Do not be afraid.” And then, as if to make sure we are listening, Jesus repeats those same words (in verse 10). The Easter story has more to say to us, of course – much more! – but it is important to hear at least that much. There is nothing for us to fear in this life or the next. God has acted decisively in the world, and our work is to “go quickly” and tell this good news.
